huck finn

The conflicts in the story are what make the story so intriguing to read for me.  Growing up with a dad that is a drunk would be a hard thing to deal with.  With Huck growing up a “free bird”, I’m sure being adopted by two elderly women was not what he wanted or really needed at the time.  Huck didn’t understand the help that Widow Douglas was trying to give him because he was so independent already in his young life.  She was trying to teach him how to be a kid and I don’t think Huck understood that or just didn’t care.  I think since Huck basically grew up alone he didn’t want any help from nobody at first.  With the Widow adopting him he was starting to adjust and make some progress in school, until the day Huck saw footsteps in the snow near the house and knew it was his father. One big conflict was between Huck and his father.  I think he resented his father for drinking and beating him and not having a dad.  When Huck’s dad found out about the treasure Huck and Tom found and the money they received he tried to kidnap his own son so he could try to get it from Huck.  Huck went to the judge and sold his small fortune and decided to run away because he didn’t know what else to do.  This is where Huck runs away to Jackson Island and he learns many things about life and becomes a better person.  While Huck was hiding on the island he discovers that Jim is also on the island because he thought Widow Douglas was going to sell him.  These two decide to float the river in hopes of reaching Cairo, a town at the mouth of the Ohio River.
